Grief counseling at Olympic Behavioral Health runs from 3618 Lantana Road in Lantana, Florida, 12 miles south of West Palm Beach, and serves Palm Beach County.
Grief turns clinical when a loss brings on a second condition, and that second condition is what treatment reaches rather than the bereavement itself.
Our JCAHO-accredited, DCF-licensed grief program treats adults 18 to 65 whose loss brought on major depressive disorder, trauma symptoms or drinking, at PHP, IOP or OP. A grief therapist works that second condition alongside the bereavement, with weekly individual therapy, and psychiatry and group work on the same plan.
If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 now. That line answers at any hour.

When Grief Stops Being Grief
Grief counseling at Olympic Behavioral Health covers the prescription and the second diagnosis that a support group cannot. Adults aged 18 to 65 are admitted across three outpatient levels when a loss has brought on major depression, trauma symptoms, or a substance use disorder.
The DSM-5-TR added prolonged grief disorder in 2022. Its first criterion is a death at least 12 months earlier, which is the published line between grief that is running its course and grief that has stalled.
A bereavement group and a weekly grief counselor both work on the loss itself, and both stop there. Bereavement counseling from a solo practitioner cannot write a prescription or carry a substance use disorder on the same treatment plan.
A Florida Department of Children and Families license covers mental health and substance abuse at Olympic Behavioral Health. Roughly 80 percent of the census is in treatment for a mental health condition, which is the track a grief client joins.
The death is the loss everybody acknowledges. These are the ones people arrive here without a word for, usually apologising for bringing them up at all. Pick whichever is nearest.

Nothing here is scored and nothing here is a diagnosis. These are the losses people arrive without a word for, and being told they are ordinary is usually the first relief. Grief this heavy is not a sign of doing it wrong. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 at any hour.
Admission Criteria
Bereavement alone is not an admission criterion. Olympic Behavioral Health admits adults aged 18 to 65 after a phone assessment and clinical review, and requires a treatable diagnosis alongside the loss plus medical stability at the outpatient level.
Florida Department of Health records show 15,639 Palm Beach County residents died in 2024, and nine in ten of the people they left behind will never need a program. Grief that is painful and still moving is not a clinical problem, and Olympic Behavioral Health will say so. Five things move a bereaved adult from grief into an admission, and any one of them is enough.
Find Out Whether Grief Counseling Fits
A phone assessment costs nothing and settles the question in about 30 minutes.
Inside the First Week
Every level of grief care includes weekly individual therapy of 50 minutes to 1 hour, daily groups, and a psychiatric evaluation. Olympic Behavioral Health assigns a case manager and a primary therapist during intake, and that therapist holds the case to discharge.
Sleep and appetite are addressed before the grief itself is opened up. Individual grief counseling starts once daily function is steady, because a client who is not sleeping cannot use the session. Isolation is worked on in group rather than one to one. Three things run in the first week alongside the individual sessions.
Levels of Care
Partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient are the three levels, and the level is set by how much of the day has stopped working rather than by how recent the death is. Average length of stay at the two intensive levels is 30 to 45 days. Lundorff and colleagues' 2017 meta-analysis put prolonged grief disorder at 9.8 percent of bereaved adults. That tenth is who this program is built for.
| Level of Care | Hours per Week | Schedule | Clinical Content | Admission Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PHP, Partial Hospitalization | 30+ hours | Seven days. Weekdays 9 AM to 3:30 PM, weekends 10 AM to 1 PM | Daily groups, individual sessions, psychiatric review, family therapy | Grief has stopped eating, sleeping, and working |
| IOP, Intensive Outpatient | 9 to 12 hours | Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 12 PM | Morning groups, weekly individual therapy, medication management | Back at work while grief keeps gaining |
| OP, Outpatient | 4 hours | One 3-hour group each week | Group work, coping skills, relapse prevention | Stepping down, or a lighter entry point |
When drinking started after the funeral, a grief client enters the dual diagnosis treatment track at the same three levels of care.
Ask What the Weeks Ahead Could Look Like
Same-day admission to grief counseling at Olympic Behavioral Health is available when admission criteria are met, with next-day admission as the alternative.
Evidence-Based Therapies
Method follows the second diagnosis, not the loss. Grief and loss therapy stacked on untreated depression stalls, so Olympic Behavioral Health runs both together under one clinician across the six therapies below.
CBT addresses the beliefs grief leaves behind, including guilt over what was said. Each belief is tested against what happened.
Grief and trauma therapy overlap when a death was sudden or witnessed. EMDR reprocesses the moment itself, which talking cannot reach.
Group runs daily on the mental health track. Grief isolation responds to a room of people faster than to an hour alone.
Grief reshapes a household. Family therapy runs weekly as needed, and a relatives meeting runs 7 PM to 9 PM on Monday.
DBT distress tolerance covers the hours grief spikes, which are evenings and anniversaries. Mindfulness training runs alongside DBT skills.
Neurofeedback targets the arousal keeping sleep broken. Art therapy gives grief clients who cannot yet speak about the death a way to work on the loss before they can put the death into words.
No grief therapist here applies one method to every client, and no grief counseling service can promise a timeline.
Diagnoses Admitted
Major depression, substance use disorder, post-traumatic stress and adjustment disorder are the four diagnoses treated alongside grief here. The second diagnosis is what makes a grief program appropriate.
Grief and depression share symptoms and are not the same condition. Where low mood outlasts the loss and reaches into appetite and sleep, both get named and treated.
Alcohol use that begins after a death meets the criteria for a co-occurring disorder, and both the bereavement and the substance use disorder are carried on one treatment plan at Olympic Behavioral Health.
A sudden, violent, or witnessed death produces trauma symptoms as well as bereavement. The trauma track admits those clients, and the trauma assessment sets the level of care and the modality.
Loss that is not a death still qualifies for grief treatment here. A marriage, a diagnosis, or a career ending produces the same disruption to sleep, appetite, and function.
Olympic Behavioral Health treats adults only, so bereaved children are referred to a service equipped for them.
Insurance and Cost
Grief counseling costs what a plan's outpatient behavioral health benefit leaves after the deductible, and Olympic Behavioral Health confirms that figure at no charge before admission. The billing is the same as for any other diagnosis, with TRICARE in-network and PPO plans on out-of-network benefits.
Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, UMR, GEHA, Humana and Anthem are the eight payers accepted on out-of-network PPO benefits. Insurance verification returns the number before intake, and Olympic Behavioral Health quotes grief counseling at the level a clinician sets.
INSURANCES WE ACCEPTTRICARE is the only in-network plan. Every other payer named is accepted on out-of-network PPO benefits. Olympic Behavioral Health does not accept Medicaid or Medicare.
Free and confidential grief counseling verification, returned by the Olympic Behavioral Health admissions team between 9 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

Why Olympic Behavioral Health
The dual license lets grief treatment reach the bereavement, the substance use disorder and the prescription in one building, where a solo practitioner reaches only the first. Six differences follow from holding both licenses instead of one.
The DCF license covers mental health and substance abuse, which permits one grief treatment plan instead of a referral to a second provider.
Psychiatric medication management is provided in-house by a certified family nurse practitioner, and psychiatrist referrals are available. A grief client's prescription change follows the therapist raising it.
Groups run daily, so a grief client is with other people the week they are admitted, not after a wait.
Three levels of grief care run at different intensities, so the hours are matched to how much of daily life has stopped.
The primary grief therapist assigned at intake stays through every level change, so the death is described once.
TRICARE benefits are confirmed with the contractor at no charge, which matters to bereaved service families.
Admissions
Nobody needs a referral or a diagnosis to call Olympic Behavioral Health about grief counseling. Admission takes four steps, and the assessment inside them is the same call whether the answer turns out to be yes or no.
The Olympic Behavioral Health admissions team asks what has changed since the death, and takes the call from a relative as readily as from the grieving client.
Verification returns what a plan pays at each of the three grief care levels. Running the check commits nobody to admission and takes minutes.
Sleep, appetite, work, drinking, and psychiatric history are recorded by phone. The clinical director approves each grief admission and sets the entry level.
Paperwork and a belongings check come first, then screening for depression and substance use. Both an Olympic Behavioral Health case manager and a grief therapist are assigned that day.
Same-day admission available, subject to criteria.
Frequently Asked Questions
Seven questions about grief counseling at Olympic Behavioral Health are answered below, covering which counselor to see, which therapy works, when a program is appropriate, what it costs and what insurance pays.
For uncomplicated bereavement, a licensed grief counselor in private practice is usually the right level. A program becomes the better choice once a second diagnosis is present, because a counselor working alone cannot prescribe medication or treat the substance use that followed.
No single method leads for every presentation. Olympic Behavioral Health selects by the condition that arrived with the grief, using cognitive behavioral therapy for guilt and belief, EMDR where the death was sudden or witnessed, and group therapy for the isolation that follows a death.
Commercial plans generally cover grief counseling under the outpatient behavioral health benefit. TRICARE is in-network here and PPO plans apply out-of-network benefits. Medicare and Medicaid are not accepted at Olympic Behavioral Health, so those holders need a provider that bills them directly.
The figure depends on the level of care and the remaining deductible, and Olympic Behavioral Health confirms it before admission at no charge. Grief counseling services at the Lantana center are billed at whichever of the three outpatient levels a clinician sets.
Look at function rather than at how much it hurts. Grief that leaves work, sleep, and eating intact is doing what grief does. Grief that has stopped those things, or that started a drinking pattern, warrants an assessment at Olympic Behavioral Health.
Stage models describe shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, testing, and acceptance. They are a description, not a sequence and not a diagnostic tool. Clinicians assess duration and daily function instead, which is what the DSM-5-TR prolonged grief disorder criteria measure.
Grief counseling runs at 3618 Lantana Road, Suite 200, Lantana, FL 33462, off I-95 at exit 61 and 12 miles south of downtown West Palm Beach. One Olympic Behavioral Health site serves grief clients from right across Palm Beach County.

Clinical Team
A grief treatment plan at Olympic Behavioral Health is built by a mental health therapist, a therapist who works both tracks, and the nurse practitioner who manages medication.

Gina works with grieving families as well as individuals, which matters when a death has reshaped a household. She has been licensed in marriage and family therapy since 2006.

Stephanie carries grief clients whose drinking started after a loss. She works across both tracks, so the bereavement and the substance use stay with one clinician.

Sabina reviews medication where sleep and appetite have not recovered after the first weeks of grief therapy. She has worked in addiction treatment and mental health for more than 12 years.
